Point of Human Origin, Mossel Bay
A split in human population occurred 1.5 million years ago, according to genetic analysis by University of Cambridge researchers, challenging the long-held idea that modern humans evolved from a single, continuous ancestral line.
The genetic analysis revealed that our ancestors divided into two genetically distinct populations around 1.5 million years ago. These groups remained separate for over a million years before merging again roughly 300,000 years ago.
One of the populations shrank dramatically after the split, entering a long bottleneck phase, but eventually gave rise to about 80% of the DNA found in present-day humans.
